Important Advice for Microsoft Dynamics Contractors

Dynamics skills are in high demand with Dynamics CRM, AX and NAV solutions increasingly vital to how thousands of businesses operate. When you’re in such a great industry it can be easy to lose focus on the day-to-day things that makes contracting a success. Here are some advice to help you avoid some common contracting pitfalls.  1. Your Career Path It’s always tempting to take roles that looks similar to ones you’ve done before. But with Dynamics technology constantly evolving it worth considering projects that may offer a lower rate but the opportunity to improve your skillset. Always ask whether a role will move your career in the right direction in future. 2. Don’t Become Unskilled As a second part to point 1 it is important to note that one of the key benefits of a permanent role is the training. To combat this, make an effort to stay on top of developments in your technology: attend conferences and workshops to prove to potential employers that you are up to date. 3. Beware of Your Employment Status Contractors must be aware of changes to their legal status as workers. Even though you may continue signing temporary contracts with the same employer, after certain amounts of time, your employment status will change in the eyes of the law. For example, after two years of continuous work for the same employer, contractors get the same redundancy rights as permanent staff. Crucially, however, after four years, fixed-term employees will automatically become permanent employees. 4. One Way Traffic It is in general very difficult for a contractor to return to a full time permanent role. Employers are generally wary that the contractor is either looking to re-skill themselves or the contractor is looking to sit-out a turbulent time in the contract market. Both these factors make contract workers less desirable permanent hires than permanent IT professionals. It is important for contractors looking to go full-time to accommodate these prejudices and prove to employers that they are changing their lifestyle, rather than serving their own interests by temporarily entering permanent employment. 5. Be Prepared Contractors are generally seen as a cost, a necessity and should be a solution to a particular problem. You may not be welcomed into the team or be invited to the Christmas party. 6. Sell Yourself It is important to be able to sell yourself and your skills to both recruiters and employers. As a contractor it is up to you to secure your next position. 7.
