The advice we give to all of our candidates is to make sure they have thoroughly prepared for their upcoming interview, and then prepared some more. We can’t stress enough how important it is to a potential employer that their interviewees have done the groundwork, and know their stuff.

Before attending a Dynamics NAV interview, make sure you know what kind of questions to expect. [if us_office]familiarizing[/if] [if uk_office]Familiarising[/if] yourself with the questions beforehand will ensure that you have the relevant information at the tip of your tongue when it comes to answering.

Preparing for a Dynamics NAV interview

Of course, you can’t predict exactly what will come up, but you can get your head around the sort of questions that are likely to. That said, we’ve gathered some examples of both ‘hard skills’ questions and ‘soft skills’ interview questions, and the kind of answers you would be expected to give.

Hard skills questions

Here are 5 common questions that often come up in Dynamics NAV interviews:

What is Dynamics NAV?

Microsoft Dynamics NAV is an enterprise resource planning application from Microsoft. It is part of the Dynamics family, and is intended to assist with finance, manufacturing, customer relationship management, supply chains, analytics and electronic commerce for small and medium-sized businesses.

What is “Delayed Insert Property”?

Delayed Insert Property sets a value that specifies whether a user leaves a record before it is inserted into the database. By default, new records are inserted when the user leaves the control.

What is “Data Per Company Property”?

It sets a value that indicates whether the table data applies to all companies in the database or only the current company. When you set the property “DataPerCompany” to FALSE, the data will be “Common to All Companies”.

What is a “Dimension”?

A dimension is data that you can add to an entry as a kind of marker so that the program can group entries with similar properties and easily retrieve these groups for analysis purposes. Dimensions can be used throughout the program on entries in journals and documents, as well as budgets.

What is “Transheader & Transfooter”?

Transheader should be printed before the first line of its data item on every page but the first. Transfooter should be printed after the last line of data item on every page but the last.

Soft skills questions

The questions above are samples of Dynamics NAV-related questions that will assess your technical knowledge and experience.

Other questions geared at showing your dedication to the Dynamics community as a whole will almost certainly be thrown in by your interviewer. They might, for example, ask the following questions.

Which other industries do you have experience in?

Although the features of NAV do naturally align with, say, manufacturing companies, its field service capabilities and invoicing processes make it appealing to the oilfield industry too. The Dynamics suite has broad scope, so having other industry experience can be a real bonus for employers.

Showing that you have experience in other industries means that you are likely able to deal with client’s varied needs and requirements, and a willingness to continually learn new things. That’s why you should also be prepared to discuss your other ventures in an interview, and not solely focus on the particular industry of the employer interviewing you.

Is there a particular project you are proud of, and why?

A question such as this is an excellent opportunity for you to highlight a period when you excelled, your enthusiasm for your profession, and, most importantly, your problem-solving abilities. To answer it, we recommend using the STAR method.

Begin by discussing the Situation or problem you were confronted with, then go over the Task you needed to complete, the Action you took to provide a solution, and finally the good Result that came from your actions.

Remember that an interview situation is an opportunity for you to brag about your accomplishments, so don't be hesitant to do so.
